What Is Cooperative Care? 

The aim of cooperative care is to make your pet an active, willing participant in handling, restraint, and medical procedures. Instead of holding your pet still and getting the job done as quickly as possible, often at the cost of their trust and comfort we teach them to choose to participate in their care. That means less stress for them, less stress for you, and a much stronger bond all around. 

Cooperative care is a core value of low stress handling and believe every vet visit, grooming session, or medication routine should be built on trust. It not only allows your pet to have a say in what happens to them and at their own pace. But also helps build a positive association with the task, making them far more treatable in the future.  

What We Can Help With 

Our cooperative care consult covers a wide range of common handling challenges, including: 

Muzzle training - Making the muzzle a safe, comfortable tool rather than a punishment 

Ear and eye checks - Allowing you to examine and apply medication without a struggle 

Checking teeth and mouth - Building comfort with oral exams and dental care 

Grooming and nail clipping - From the clippers to the brush, we help it feel routine 

Restraint and holding - Teaching calm acceptance of gentle restraint for exams or basic care 

Needle shy pets - Working through fear of injections so vaccinations and treatments go smoothly 

How It Works 

Cooperative care isn't just a one-off appointment; it's a process. Much of the training happens at home, between sessions, where your pet feels safe. You'll learn practical exercises to practice day-to-day, and we'll be here to help you troubleshoot and progress to the next stage. 

We'll help you understand what your pet is telling you. Build a step-by-step plan tailored to their specific needs and emotional state. We will start right where your pet is comfortable, not where we want them to be. And gradually progress toward your goal, whether that's accepting ear drops or calmly walking into the clinic
