Egg-citing Easter Tips: Keeping Your Pets Safe While You Celebrate!

As Easter approaches, many of us are excited about the festive treats that come with the holiday, especially the abundance of chocolate eggs and bunnies. While it's a time for indulging in delicious sweets, it's important to remember to be careful with chocolate around the house, especially if you have pets. Chocolate can be toxic to animals, even in tiny amounts, and it can lead to serious health problems. Other Easter treats that are a no-go for our pets include anything with cocoa powder and raisins - so those hot cross buns are off-limits for them too!

If you're planning an Easter egg hunt, keep in mind that pets might be tempted by the sweet smell of hidden chocolate eggs. Here are a few tips to help you keep the festive tradition going while keeping curious paws away from the treats.

  • Make sure to count all the sweets you’ve hidden, so there are no sneaky treats left behind for your pet to discover later - who knows, they might be on the hunt too!

  • If you're hiding treats in spots your pet can sniff out, be sure to stash them in a sealed container just in case your furry friend is the first to find them!

  • Give your pets their own Easter adventure by setting up a mini hunt in a separate room, packed with toys and tasty treats just for them!

  • Get creative with the hunt by hiding fun tokens that can be traded in for tasty treats later! You could use soft toys, plastic eggs, or even cardboard cut-outs as playful alternatives.

It's always better to be safe and prevent any potential mishaps while still enjoying the festivities! However, if your furry friend does decide to indulge in some chocolate treats this Easter season, the Dunedin Emergency Clinic will be open and ready to save the day.
