From Weight Loss to Wound Care: Vet Nurses Are Here to Help!

Veterinary nurses are a core part of any clinic team. While they might greet you at reception or assist during appointments, much of their work happens behind the scenes. From monitoring anesthesia during surgery to running diagnostic testing in the lab, vet nurses play a critical role in every stage of your pet’s care in and out of the clinic.

Here are just a few of the essential duties our nurses perform daily:

  • Monitoring anesthesia and supporting surgical procedures

  • Drawing blood and running diagnostic tests

  • Nursing hospitalized patients

  • Cleaning and maintaining infection control

  • Triaging patients over the phone

  • Assisting vets with treatments and procedures

  • Admitting and discharging patients

  • Supporting pet owners with advice and education

  • Managing reception

Nurses are also playing an increasing role in direct client care through nurse consults. Nurse consults are appointments run by our qualified veterinary nurses. These consults allow nurses to meet with pet owners directly, offering valuable care, advice, and follow-up support.

While nurses cannot diagnose illnesses or prescribe medications, they are trained to handle a wide range of services and support your pet’s wellbeing in many practical ways. Nurse consults not only free up our vets to focus on complex medical cases, but they also ensure your pet gets consistent, personalized attention.

Nurse Consults We Offer

Here are some of the services our vet nurses can provide:

  • Weight-Loss Management Consults
If your pet needs to lose a few kilos, we can create a tailored weight-loss plan to help them safely reach their ideal weight - complete with diet advice, progress tracking, and regular check-ins.

  • Post-Op Checks, Suture Removal and Bandage Changes
After surgery, our nurses can perform post-operative checks to ensure everything is healing well, including the removal of sutures and re-bandaging when needed.

  • Vaccinations & Injections
Our nurses can administer routine vaccinations for healthy pets. Nurses can also give specific injectable medications like Beransa and Cytopoint. However a vet visit is still required every 6 months.

  • Blood Draws & Blood Pressure Checks
Need blood work done? Our nurses are skilled at collecting samples and monitoring your pet’s blood pressure.

  • Medication Administration
If your pet struggles with tablets or needs medication given via injection, we can help ensure it’s done correctly and with minimal stress.

  • Nail Clips & Anal Gland Expression
These may not be the most glamorous parts of pet care, but they’re important! Our nurses can keep nails trimmed and help manage your pet’s anal gland health.

  • Microchipping
Microchipping is a quick, permanent way to help reunite you with your pet if they ever go missing and can be implanted by a nurse.

Our nurse consultations offer a convenient and cost-effective way to manage your pet’s routine health needs. Ready to book a nurse consultation? Give us a call or speak to our team at reception, we’re always happy to help guide you to the right appointment.
