Keeping your Pet Cool, Calm and Collected During Fireworks

As Guy Fawkes Night and New Year’s celebrations approach, many of us look forward to the dazzling fireworks displays. But for our pets, those loud bangs and flashing lights can be frightening and stressful.

Here are some simple yet effective tips to help your furry friends stay safe and calm during this noisy time of year.

Create a Calm, Safe Environment

  • Close windows and doors to reduce the sound of fireworks.

  • Draw curtains or blinds to block out the flashes of light.

  • Play familiar sounds such as the TV or some gentle, relaxing music to help mask the noise.

Consider setting up a ‘safe space’ for your pet. A quiet, cozy area such as a crate, wardrobe, or corner of a room. Keep the lights dim, add some soft music, and include their favourite toys or treats to make it feel secure and familiar.

Calming Aids That Can Help

There are several aids that can help reduce anxiety during fireworks season:

  • Pheromone diffusers or sprays like Feliway (for cats) or Adaptil (for dogs) release comforting synthetic pheromones that promote calm and security.

  • Anxiety wraps such as ThunderShirts which act like a gentle hug, similar to a weighted blanket.

  • Natural supplements like Calmex can also support relaxation.

If your pet’s anxiety is severe, speak to your vet. They can discuss other options, including short-term medication to help keep them comfortable during stressful times.

Keep Them Safe

  • Walk dogs earlier in the day, before it gets dark and the fireworks begin.

  • Keep cats and dogs indoors during fireworks and lock pet doors to prevent any escape attempts.

Although it’s natural to want to comfort your pet, avoid over-cuddling or fussing when they’re scared as it can reinforce fearful behaviour. Instead, stay calm and relaxed so they take their cue from you.
