Keeping Your Pet’s Smile Bright
We all know how important oral hygiene is for ourselves, but it's easy to forget that our pets need it too. Just like humans, poor oral hygiene can lead to gum disease, tooth decay, bad breath, and even more serious health issues. Dental issues are more common in pets than we might think, with 70-80% of them developing some form of dental disease by the time they turn three.
We all know how painful toothaches can be, but it’s tough for our pets to tell us when they’re in discomfort. Here are some warning signs that could indicate your pet is dealing with dental issues and should be seen by a vet.
-
Bad breath
-
Excessive drooling
-
Difficulty chewing/eating as well as change in eating habits
-
Swollen, bleeding and inflamed gums
-
Pawing at mouth and face
-
Weight loss
However, there are several things you can do at home to help your pets keep their pearly whites shining!
Brushing Teeth
Toothbrushes and toothpaste aren't just for humans! The most effective way to prevent dental disease in your pet is by brushing their teeth for them - after all, they don’t have opposable thumbs to do it on their own. Brushing helps prevent build-up of plaque and tartar. This process will take some practice with plenty of positive reinforcement, as well as patience for both you and your four legged friends.
For this you’ll need a special type of pet friendly brush or finger cloth, and some pet friendly paste. Avoid using human products, as some ingredients can be harmful to our pets. We offer all the products you’ll need for this right here at the clinic.
Water additives
If your pet isn’t a fan of having their mouth messed with, TEEF might be the perfect solution. It is a prebiotic powder that is as simple as sprinkling it into the water bowl. TEEF targets the root cause of dental issues while promoting beneficial bacteria to support healthy gums, clean teeth, and fresh breath. It’s completely tasteless and odorless, so even the pickiest of pets won’t mind!
Diet
A balanced diet is essential for our pets' overall health, as well as for maintaining good oral hygiene. Proper nutrition supports the immune system, which plays a key role in preventing infections, including those that can affect the gums.
There are also different types of dental biscuits that assist in reducing plaque buildup and preventing tartar formation. These biscuits are specially crafted to be larger and more textured compared to regular kibble, creating a "brushing effect" that helps minimize tartar and plaque accumulation.
Regular check ups
Regular dental check-ups with a veterinarian is one of the most effective ways to maintain good oral hygiene. Detecting dental issues early allows us to address them promptly, helping to prevent these problems from becoming more severe.
