Introducing Laparoscopic Spays!

A Modern, Minimally Invasive Option for Your Dog

We’re proud to announce that our clinic is the first in the lower South Island to offer laparoscopic spays. An advanced, modern, and minimally invasive alternative to the traditional spay procedure.

This technique is already widely used in human surgery and leading veterinary hospitals around the world, and we’re excited to bring its benefits to pets in our region. Studies have shown that dogs undergoing a laparoscopic spay show up to 65% fewer signs of pain compared to the traditional method - an incredible improvement in comfort and recovery.

What Is a Laparoscopic Spay?

A laparoscopic spay uses two or three tiny incisions to insert specialized instruments and a high-definition camera into the abdomen. This allows the surgeon to remove the ovaries with exceptional precision while keeping internal trauma to an absolute minimum.

Because the procedure uses high-tech equipment and requires advanced training, it provides far better visibility of the internal organs than traditional surgery. This ensures a safer, more accurate operation for your dog.

Benefits of a Laparoscopic Spay

Laparoscopic spays offer clear advantages over the conventional technique:

Smaller Incisions

Incisions are typically 0.5–1cm, compared with 8–12cm for a traditional spay.

Less Post-Operative Pain

Instead of tearing or stretching the ovarian ligament (as occurs in traditional surgery), the laparoscopic method carefully cauterizes and removes these structures safely inside the abdomen—resulting in dramatically less pain.

Faster Recovery

Most dogs return to normal activity within 2–3 days, compared with 14–21 days after a traditional spay.

Reduced Risk of Complications

Smaller incisions mean lower chances of bleeding, inflammation, or wound infections.

Enhanced Surgical Accuracy

The magnified camera view provides excellent visualization of internal organs, improving surgical precision.

Minimal Scarring

Tiny incisions heal quickly and leave almost no visible mark.

Is a Laparoscopic Spay Right for My Dog?

This procedure is suitable for many dogs, depending on their size, age, and overall health. It is especially beneficial for medium to large-breed bitches, but our veterinary team is happy to assess any dog to determine whether this is the best option.
